Clean Beauty and Mary Jean

As a species we have caused a lot of harm and suffering. Long term damage to our planet and to those we share it with. The future does look bleak. Inhospitable. This is our story about what we can do to make a difference.

Below we give our commitments as a family owned business. When you choose Mary Jean you are making a decision to be part of that change for the better.

Continue with your support by sharing our story with friends and family.

Cruelty Free skincare and Scottish Highland soaps, organic from Mary Jean Speyside Moray soap manufacturer

When you grow up on a small farm with animals, chickens are a common sight. But if a fox ever gets into a chicken shed then very few chickens will survive. The fox will kill them all.

One morning opening the door to the chicken shed I felt something bad had happened. No tears, but a raging anger as I realised a fox had got our chickens. I was 9 or 10 years old and heartbroken. Seeing animals suffer is rather personal for me, understandably.

We do not use or abuse animals for product performance or validatity. And no one does so on our behalf.

The use of factory farming practices for larger profit is unethical and causing harm and pain for animals

Values are generational. Passed on, passed down.

It became clear to myself and my family. Our ethics and family values must be visible to you in a format you understood and could trust.

We felt the time was right to seek accreditation from Cruelty Free International. By applying to their Leaping Bunny programme, this was our first step in the right direction.

Being seen as a cruelty free brand is an important part of our efforts to making this world a better place to live in. A decision to stand against animal cruelty, abuse and neglect is a step forward. That must be the least expectation of any business today.

Theobroma Cacao (Certified Organic)

Cocoa has a melting point that of your own body temperature. Any quality skin care product with Cocoa as a main ingredient your skin will absorb. The result is your skin feels silky-soft, smooth and hydrated.

  • antioxidant powerhouse: Cocoa butter is high in antioxidants, helping fight off free radicals. Free radicals are the cause of skin ageing, dark patches, and dull skin. Protecting your skin from free radicals is crucial to keep your skin healthy and confidence beautiful.

  • reduce stretch marks and scars: Many women claim that the regular use of Cocoa butter kept stretch marks at bay both during and after pregnancy.

  • rich in moisturisation: Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids and hydrates the skin deeply, making it a wonderful addition to body moisturisers. It contains Oleic, Palmitic, and Stearic acids, each nourishes the skin.

Cold pressed botanical apricot kernel oil is delicious for skin care for ageing mature and dry sun damanged skin conditions

We made a pledge to be a sustainable business. Cruelty free, moving our business forward based on ethical choices alone. This benefits us, and you. This benefits the natural world and wildlife we all cherish.

Handmade soap is made better, higher quality and artisan ethical standards with improved grade and purity of cold-pressed oils

Benefits of small batch handmade you receive a product that is fresh with long life yet. Sustainable, only made as and when demand is present. We have no interest for large production runs, or the long term storage of our product.

Tradition is best. Handmade and artisan principles lowering our energy and water usage. Waste is acceptable because it has become normalised in the workplace. Production costs factor in loss from wastage, ensuring profitability is still certain.

As a small business, our raw ingredients are far too expensive to throw away. In fact there is very little waste at Mary Jean. Because we:

  • order "just in time" what we need, we don't go bulk buying raw materials

  • we produce what we need, when we need, nothing is stored for a rainy day

  • close to expiry date ingredients we use in early product developments

  • soap off-cuts we share with family, or sell by the kilo weight

It is true handmade products are a little more expensive because they are not mass produced. But it is also true handmade means higher standards. Described as planet friendly, less pollution created in producing them.

When you choose Mary Jean you are making a decision to invest in a smaller business. One which cares enough not to over produce what isn't already made to order.

It is just an empty plastic bottle, alone and innocent and causing a nuisance for the next few hundred years

In a summer country meadow a butterfly lands on a flower

Plastic waste is going to triple over the next 20 years.

So.. what difference does it make if the product you bought packaged in plastic is recyclable? What's the big deal with packaging composed of recycled materials?

This is the bullshit big business and industry promotes. They wish for you, the consumer, to have a clear conscience. Guilt free shopping.

But they know the damn facts. Less than 12% of plastic waste in the UK goes for recyclement.

Plastic is still plastic. As long as we have this addiction it will continue to pollute our oceans and marine life.

Wake up to the fact our waste is either buried or burnt off. Which is the lesser evil, you decide.

Perceptions are all wrong, there is no such thing as eco green plastics, all plastic is polluting because it is synthetic man made

The claim that plastic can be green and sustainable is a carefully crafted lie sponsored by many an industry with self interests to protect, carefree of the pollution ruining our beautiful planet

A little plastic exists in our packaging but the vast majority of our packaging is paper, card and glass. Future plans are to continue to use glass and aluminium or tin.

When you shop with Mary Jean you support a growing family business. Genuine concerns for the environment and the wildlife. Many species on the brink of extinction because of deforestation and illegal hunting.

It pains us to feel things are getting out of hand. Governments, investors and multi-nationals continue to ignore repeated demands for change.

The call for change is falling on deaf ears.
