100% natural and 100% made by hand in the Highland Speyside, Scotland
This is the stuff of legends The Highland Midge lotion.
As many have battled and lost a war on the Highland Scottish midge. Pretenders have come and gone, long in the past lost in the glens who tried and tried to save the day and life.
No more pretenders to the throne. No more howling you'll hear through the glen people running and screaming in their blind panic.
Made in Scotland this stuff is, for Scotland and for those who brave the Highlands. For those who hate the bugs as they nag and nip like an old woman does. Take this lotion to save yourself.
It was either them or us.. enough was enough
Bothering Mary and Elizabeth at one of the Highland games one year, the midges were thick and heavy, having been breeding in their 10s of millions weeks earlier.
Mary decided enough was enough.. what was on the market wasn't tough enough.
Not for her and not for passing customers who were also being eating alive. Something was going to be done about the Scottish midge.
Once and for all.
As the season came to an end a frustrated, angry Mary formulated a caring lotion what was one day to become a luxurious moisturiser. Creamy and light. Quality ingredients best for care and health of skin, nothing spared or left out.
Elizabeth made a slight change to this early formula. Reducing one thing for the inclusion of Aloe Vera and Neem oil.
The family experimented with this early formulation for many months, reporting back their thoughts. Mary and Elizabeth were blessed with the feedback they went ahead with the decision of what essential oils to use.
Having read about the therapeutic benefits of Bog Myrtle, Elizabeth twisted Mary's arm to include this amazing wonder oil. Sourcing a supplier in the UK began in earnest and despite the overtly expensive cost of it, Mother and Daughter went ahead with it.
Now a viable product the lotion was tested in great secrecy by the family and a small band of friends during the new season and thankfully the summer was midge heavy as usual on the West coast.
Successful results were the midges hated the lotion. Despised it. Few sustained bites worth gurning about around the camp fire, as fun, laughter and cheer brought in the night.
Back home in Fochabers Mary hastily sent off her 1Kg of lotion to the UK laboratory for testing. Months later the results finally arrived. The lotion got a green light for a launch and marketing.
In the early days few would believe, until they tempted themselves to try it. Just in case we were right and it might save them a ruined holiday.
Since those early days the Highland Midge lotion has been taken as far away as Vietnam, Egypt and France and Austria and Kenya receiving excellent appraisal from our customers time and again.

Questions & Answers
Why a lotion, isn't a spray much more effective?
Elizabeth had thought about a spray but decided against one for the following reasons:
A spray is known to evaporate, quickly on contact with skin
Using a spray, it can be carried off in a wind, therefore completely ineffective
Sprays typically use a high volume of water or an oil substitute, for dispersion
With a spray, complete skin coverage isn't possible
Overall the decision to use a lotion is what has made the product so effective in how it works and what has made so many customers happy using it.
Did it take long to get the correct formula you now use?
Looking back, the formulation now used, it took a little short of two years of maddening trials within the family and close friends. Many tweaks later and much discussion.
The knowledge Mary has on aromatherapy carrier oils made a tremendous difference to getting the formula "just right".
Is the Highland Midge lotion available to purchase retail in the US?
Currently the Highland Midge lotion is only available to purchase online from our website. We can and often do, deliver to the US and other destinations upon request.
Mary Jean® are seeking a partner from the US who could ensure this quality product is carefully distributed to choice outlets.
One day soon you may find it in a local store in your state.
Are there free complementary samples available?
Sorry, unfortunately no. The ingredients are expensive, many of them are organic, the product is handmade and the cost outlay for providing free samples is beyond our means presently.
Is the texture really creamy like you say?
Yes. The texture is in many ways due to a premium quality emulsifier in use. This emulsifing system provides a rich and smooth feeling to the touch. But not too much of it, as to leave a greasy layer afterwards.
Can the lotion be used on the face safely?
You can use it on your face most definitely without any fear or worries. The use of Jojoba is a best ideal oil for the face anyway ensuring the other ingredients are absorbed rapidly.
Suggest also you smudge some of the lotion on behind your ears for additional protection.
You can also massage the lotion into your roots and scalp without spoiling your hair provided it is thoroughly washed out at the end of the day.

Products containing vitamin E as an ingredient are easier to apply for overall use on skin. Problem areas that are very dry, such as the cuticles and elbows, benefit from the inclusion of vitamin E in a skincare product.
